The most treasured books on my shelves are the ones that inspire my Regency plots. The era is so flamboyant, a period of extravagance and self-indulgence that trickles into scandals. The Georgians obeyed a handful of social rules, then did what they wanted. Of course, the people who break the rules make the best stories.

Textbooks record what people wore, where they lived, and I visit places and see the clothes, furniture and carriages. But my precious books are filled with letters between family members, diaries and memoirs. They are story gold dust, containing tales like men passing messages between sheets of music they turn for a woman playing a pianoforte, catching hold of a woman’s hand and pulling her behind a door to kiss her, meeting a woman for one night at a ball, then turning up the next morning and shouting up at her window to propose… Even a courtesan becoming a countess! And one couple swapped pubic hair to remember each other! These real stories inspired many scenes in the Marlow Family Secrets (I have not used the pubic hair one, though, hee hee).

The Forbidden Love of an Officer is partly inspired by Lieutenant General Henry Paget, 2nd Earl of Uxbridge; he eloped with the Duke of Wellington’s sister-in-law. The couple were disowned until the British army faced Napoleon, and Uxbridge had to serve under Wellington again.
