I absolutely love writing about nightmare dates.
Anyone who has been single probably has their own collection of disastrous date stories. What is different for me though is that I actually get to use mine for something; I take inspiration from them for my books. I am also very kindly gifted stories from my friends too, who are more than happy to inspire me with their tales.
Here are three of my favourite disastrous date scenes, from my books, that are based on real events.
(In the interest of protecting people’s privacy, I won’t say what happened to who, or give too many of the real details.)
The Doctor Who bedroom in Truth or Date
I’m very happy to say that this one didn’t happen to me, it happened to a friend. In Truth or Date, Ruby goes home with a guy who has a Doctor Who-themed bedroom. Decor, duvet cover, posters, music – even a life-sized Dalek. In the real story, it was a girl’s room, and something much weirder than Doctor Who.
The wedding date in Fake It or Leave It
In this story as Cara tries to play the dating game again she winds up meeting a man for a date who surprises her by taking her to a wedding… except it’s his ex’s wedding, and he’s not in a good place about it. Yes, most people have been hung up on an ex at some point. Some have even had to sit through their weddings.
The wake date in Truth or Date
Another from Truth or Date, where Ruby meets a guy for a date who is looking very dapper in a black suit… then she realises that he’s just come from his dad’s wake, and he’s seriously drunk. Yep, this actually happened to someone in real life. Yep, it was weird.
The “Fourgie” in The Suite Life
No spoilers, but there is a scene in The Suite Life where Gigi is hanging out with a band and sees… some things. I used to spend a lot of time with bands, and so did my friends, so we’ve seen all sorts. The book is out today, so I won’t give anything away about this one. But seeing is believing, and reading is the next best thing.
The Suite Life is out now in all formats!
