Hopefully, our young hero, Icel, an orphaned youth living at the Mercian royal centre of Tamworth, has already won your heart. If not, I can promise you stories of courage, deadly danger, sorrow and a coming-of-age tale of a boy who wants to be a healer but instead must become a warrior. As Mercia is rocked by internal power struggles, and external threats from her enemies, the Viking raiders, the king of Wessex and the king of the East Angles, it is to the loyal warriors of Mercia that the kingdom must turn. Icel has already endured much in the name of his country. He’s made enemies and allies and become a little too important to the king, who has a jealous and ineffectual son and a scheming wife. He has become accepted as a warrior in the warband of Ealdorman Ælfstan and has also travelled many of Mercia’s roads and riverways. With his somewhat difficult-natured horse, Brute, and his allies and friends, Wulfheard, Oswy and Ealdorman Ælfstan, young Icel has known grief, vengeance, triumph, and joy. He’s also healed almost every member of his warband at one point or another. In book 4, Eagle of Mercia, our hero is caught between conflicting oaths given to his king and others. Determined to aid those he can, he finds himself, alongside his fellow warriors, deep in Wessex territory, with not only Wessex warriors to evade but the Viking raiders currently encamped on the Isle of Sheppey as well. A tale of violence, triumph and sorrow, Eagle of Mercia sees Icel once more battling for his country against those who think to undermine the king, Wiglaf. Journey with Icel through the Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex in the 830s, as the first Viking age of England begins to escalate.
