For those of you who are not already familiar with the characters in Minnie’s Orphans, let me give you a potted history.
The Five Shilling Children sees youngsters sold into an orphanage, two of whom belong to Minnie. Her husband, not being their father, sells them to Reed’s.
When Polly Fitch is sold on yet again, her brother Adam runs away to find her with the help of his friends at Reed’s Orphanage. Along the way they meet others, once Polly is rescued, and during their adventures they discover the value of friendship, love and harmony. Eventually they are reunited with Minnie who takes them all into her own orphanage, having married Adam and Polly’s real father’s friend.
Minnie’s Orphans sees us five years on when one of the coterie is released from prison having served a term for pick-pocketing: he is welcomed back into the fold.
After initially having a contretemps with boys from Reed’s, Adam makes friends with them; Polly and Dickie Stanton, the eldest of the three brothers, becoming sweethearts.
James, Adam’s older brother, has to organise his wedding rather quickly to Felicity Hargreaves. But is Fliss all she appears to be? Telling the family she has been thrown out for being pregnant, she is brought into the household where upset abounds. Fliss bullies the maid and threatens her with a knife.
Adam and family inherit a fortune in money and property from an old gentleman he works the allotments with.
Una Reed’s staff desert her after Una suffers ill-health.
Dickie Stanton, Polly’s sweetheart, is attacked by a stranger – what will be the outcome?
Will Fliss Hargreaves be caught out lying and stealing, or will she get away with it? Will she try again to attack the maid or will she focus on another member of the family?
What will happen to Una and her orphanage if she’s not well enough to run it?
How does Adam deal with his inheritance?
Will there ever be a wedding in the family?
So many questions – are any of them likely to be answered?
Minnie’s orphans face trials and tribulations of their own, but they will overcome – because they stick together as one big happy family.
