Meet Me under the Northern Lights
Let’s set sail…
The UK was treated to seeing the aurora borealis last year but, trust me, there is nothing better than seeing this sky phenomenon in Iceland. And, although, when you think of Iceland the Northern Lights are one of the first things that come to mind, seeing them is by no means guaranteed! In the summer months, May-July, the Northern Lights are rarely sighted, so, if you’re looking for those perfect photographs of the colourful skeins of light in the sky, you need to visit in the wintertime. Which is exactly what I did!
In November, I headed to Reykjavik with my teen, Robin, as Iceland was a long-held dream destination for them. We were spending only 3 nights in the Icelandic capital, and we wanted to make the most of the time. Having read that the Northern Lights can be elusive even in winter due to the weather conditions, I booked our boat trip from the harbour on our first night. This was in the hope that, if we didn’t see them on this first occasion, we could go on the trip on one of the other nights and hopefully strike it lucky then.
But, that first night, was the night! We hadn’t sailed out far from the harbour before the colours started to form above us – greens, then reds and purples. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before – completely magical. With the help of the crew, I also managed to take some photos with my phone that weren’t completely terrible. However, it really was better to just stand on the sightseeing boat in the freezing air and just capture the sight in the moment.
