A destination wedding seemed like the perfect backdrop for a getaway romance with the opportunity for friends and family to come together to celebrate the nuptials in Sardinia, the beautiful setting of The Island of Hopes and Dreams. Weddings abroad have been increasingly popular with British couples chasing guaranteed sunshine and beautiful scenery in places such as Greece and Italy. Add into the mix clashing families and different friendship groups to provide drama and conflict, and the key ingredients of a story are there – even a romance with a guaranteed HEA.
I also have first-hand experience of a wedding abroad – my own in Greece to my Greek husband. It was wonderfully chaotic with a change of venue on the morning of our wedding due to Greek bureaucracy! We were supposed to be married in the gorgeous garden setting at the restaurant where our reception was taking place, but we ended up crammed into the Mayor’s office in the nearby town for the actual official marriage part!
There were other surprise moments too, such as being invited by the women of the family into a circle to perform the ‘Bride’s Dance’, a tradition I was unaware of until I was attempting it! I had no clue what I was doing, but it was certainly a unique experience!
For Lola and Rhys, two of the guests at the Sardinian wedding in The Island of Hopes and Dreams, their past relationships play havoc and add a touch of drama and conflict to the story, but there’s also love, friendship and beautiful Italian scenery.
As for our own wedding, I wouldn’t change a thing, but let’s just say the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding isn’t far-fetched. We think we’re officially married…
