Mother Knows Best Inspiration

I regularly get asked where the ideas come from for my books. I usually scratch my head and mutter something about people watching and dreams, or snippets of conversation overheard on public transport and in shops, but with Mother Knows Best, the answer is easy – I got my idea for this particular story from my better half. After meeting with friends one evening whose daughter was on callout for her job at the local hospital, my husband Richard suggested that perhaps I could write a story about a woman who regularly got called out in the early hours and use that theme to build a rather twisted and sinister tale. The idea for the story hit me straightaway, all the characters coming together in my head. From that moment on, Mother Knows Best was created.

It was a difficult book to write with various characters and viewpoints as well as a backstory interwoven into the present that required a huge amount of editing, but with a lot of help from my editors and proofreaders, I hope I managed to create a story that provides plenty of shocks and unexpected twists.

For many years since my first book was published, family and friends have laughed and made jokes about how Richard should sleep with one eye open, stating that if he ever disappears, they will search my books for clues about where he might be buried, (our patio is far too small for a grown man) but I can now say after his input into Mother Knows Best and his initial idea for the final twist in the story, that maybe, just maybe I should be the one who is fearful and sleep with one eye open, as his mind is clearly as twisted and depraved as mine!
