The twenties changed the world, moving standards, and opening up new horizons: Al Capone, also known as Scarface was only one of many notable people of the era. Thought to be guilty of murder amongst other crimes, he was only given eleven years in prison for evading his taxes. Other people who helped change our world were Albert Einstein, Coco Channel, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Chaplain.
There are many more but these are some of the ones that seem to me to have had tremendous influence in their own spheres. It might seem strange to include a dress designer with a brilliant scientist, but Coco Channel revolutionised women’s clothing, setting us free from the long, dragging skirts and boned bodices of previous eras. She was the one who inspired the Flapper girls, those abandoned young things who danced wildly and lived for the moment – and why shouldn’t they? We had all survived the worst war known to man and who knew when the next one would be? As it was only a few short years would intervene before the next terrible war. So those girls and their young men made the most of it, dancing, and drinking, and playing silly pranks. It was a time to be happy, a good time – the twenties.
Soon enough the Depression would descend and life would become hard again for people who had had a small taste of a better way of living, before they were once more plunged into the darkness of war. So dance to Louis Armstrong’s beautiful Jazz, laugh at Charlie Caplin’s antics, fall in love with the film stars of the age, and have fun. It is the twenties so who cares?
