Inspired by the real Ambassadors Plot of 1918, in Murder in Moscow, Fiona and Kitty become embroiled in a plot to assassinate Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.
The Ambassador Plot was spearheaded by British ambassador Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart along with super spy Sydney Reilly, known as the Ace of Spies. Reilly was a Russian-born adventurer and spy employed by Scotland Yard’s Special Branch during WWI. Operating as a double agent, Reilly hatched the plan to assassinate Lenin. Thanks to a mole, the operation was not successful. Reilly escaped, but Lockhart was arrested. Some think Reilly himself was the mole.
Sidney Reily
Reilly was the basis for Ian Fleming’s character James Bond. Fleming was friends with Lockhart, who regaled him with stories of Reilly’s exploits. In the television series, Reilly, Ace of Spies, Sam Neill plays Reilly. And he appears in the latest Fiona Figg Mystery.
