Toni and Joel experienced a life-changing event when baby Ruby unexpectedly came into their lives. However, the impact wasn’t what Toni had envisioned. Along with Ruby’s arrival came a topic that is often kept silent: post-adoption depression.
Post-adoption depression shares similarities with postpartum depression, which parents commonly experience after childbirth. It encompasses a range of emotions such as sadness, anxiety, guilt and, at times, regret. These feelings can arise after the child arrives, leaving parents to navigate emotions.
Throughout the story, Toni grapples with varying emotions, including guilt, shame, inadequacy, and a sense of failure. It’s not uncommon for adoptive parents to have hopes for a bond and continuous joy once their adopted child joins the family. Unrealistic expectations often serve as triggers for post-adoption depression. When reality doesn’t match these expectations, disappointment and sadness can seep in. This can leave parents feeling disheartened and questioning their parenting abilities. The resulting sadness often leads to feelings of guilt and shame for not experiencing the happiness and fulfilment they anticipated upon adopting a child.
These emotions can become stronger (as Toni’s experience shows) when adoptive parents feel like they are disappointing the child they have desperately dreamed of bringing into their family.
Adoptive parents need professional support if faced with post-adoptive depression. One of Toni’s challenges was trying to handle her situation alone. Her feelings of embarrassment and failure stopped her from seeking help. Therapists and counsellors who specialise in adoption-related issues provide a space to explore emotions and offer valuable guidance on the path to healing. Alongside professional assistance, connecting with support groups and online communities dedicated to adoption can be a lifeline. Sharing experiences with others who have gone through similar journeys can provide comfort and insight.
Post-adoption depression is a significant challenge that adoptive parents may face. It is essential to confront these emotions without feeling ashamed. By seeking help, building a support system, and practising self-care, adoptive parents can navigate these feelings and create the loving, nurturing environment that their adopted child deserves. If only Liv had provided Toni with the information doula (Petal Blossom) presented. My Sister’s Baby would be quite a different story.
