  • Grace Murphy is a dedicated midwife and a loyal friend. She lives in nurses’ accommodation with her two friends, all three of them far away from their homes in Ireland. A level-headed, serious-minded girl with a kind and generous heart she is a calming influence on impetuous Clodagh and a comfort to nervous Patsy. When she falls in love with the handsome wealthy Spitfire pilot, Richard Carmichael, she knows that despite their different backgrounds hers is a love that will last a lifetime. Her romance is all she could ever have hoped for, and when disastrous circumstances destroy her hopes and dreams, she faces them with fortitude. Even though she meets with many pitfalls along the way she struggles to make the best of every situation for she has someone whose life now depends on her and she will not fail him no matter what life throws at her. Strong and tenacious she strives with all her being to make her own happiness.

  • Clodagh Flynn, a girl as wild as her fiery red hair, lives for the moment. She is inclined to run full speed into anything that takes her fancy regardless of the consequences. Ignoring any advice that her friends might offer she forms a relationship with a manipulative ground crew airman. Envious of Grace’s romance with a fighter pilot she allows her jealousy to spoil their friendship. Her reckless search for happiness leaves her with problems beyond her control.

  • Patsy is a wonderful midwife who loves delivering babies in the wee small hours. She also ‘mothers’ her two friends and delights in making their lodgings comfortable by doing the household chores and preparing tasty meals. Afraid of men and almost afraid of her own shadow she shuns the social life on offer at the RAF camp, and being extremely homesick she devotes her affections to Joey her budgerigar. An unforeseen problem at home in her native Kerry has her rushing back home where she eventually finds true happiness.
