Dear Reader,
Meet Grace McLeod and Angus MacKenzie.
‘There’s no point in waiting,’ Grace sullenly told her father. ‘I haven’t really got a choice, have I? I’ll have to marry the man, no matter how ghastly he is.’ Thus, Grace McLeod reluctantly agreed to marry Angus MacKenzie, a man she’d never met.
Angus glared at his father. ‘I’ll marry the wretched woman, but don’t think I’ll ever stop loving Jessie. Not for a minute, I won’t.’ Thus, Angus MacKenzie agreed to his father’s ultimatum. In order to inherit the mill that was his life, he would marry a woman he’d never met and could never love.
When two people marry who love each other, it’s frequently difficult to adjust to each other’s lives. When two people marry who don’t love each other, it’s even more difficult. And when there are others who, through resentment, malice, anger or greed, are determined to see that the marriage fails, it’s more difficult still.
‘You’ll be surrounded by rivers and trees and hedges and fields, and you like walking, so it’ll be perfect for you,’ Grace’s father said as they arrived at the mill. ‘It’s obviously good farming country. The oats and corn are clearly doing well – the first leaves and shoots are already visible,’ he went on conversationally, nodding towards the grain fields on the right. ‘Your miller will be pleased.’
‘He’s not my miller.’ Her voice caught in her throat.’
Will Angus ever become her miller? I invite you to read the book and find out!
